OR, HOW TO INSULATE YOURSELF FROM PERFECTLY DESERVED CRITICISM

File under : Obama | Macho Bambi at it again | how dare you challenge my patriotism

First of all, apologies to Troy Aikman - this is not a blog about the immortal captain of our 3 juggernauts of 1992, 1993, and 1995. The Dallas Cowboys of that era remain supreme as the best team that ever took the field. [and shut up you tired Pat weinies - nobody loves you or cares what you think]

Imagine hearing a speech by Troy Aikman that contained the following:

I have found, for the first time, my devotion to the Philadelphia Eagles challenged—at times as a result of my own carelessness, more often as a result of the desire by some to score political points and raise fears about who I am and what I stand for. I will never question the Eagle-love of Jeremiah Trotter. And I will not stand idly by when I hear others question mine.

Read on for Obama comedy.....

Witness the staggering chutzpah of one Macho Bambi, inexperienced dullard and putative Democrat nominee for Leader of the Free World. A speech today (6/30/08) at the Truman Memorial Building in Independence, MO features this knee-slapper:

I have found, for the first time, my patriotism challenged—at times as a result of my own carelessness, more often as a result of the desire by some to score political points and raise fears about who I am and what I stand for. I will never question the patriotism of others in this campaign. And I will not stand idly by when I hear others question mine.

Have you ever heard such unintended comedy? This is not the pot calling the kettle black. THAT would be Obama and Hillary questioning each other's patriotism. No, this is a bit different.

On the one hand is a guy like Bambi who trucks with terrorists, votes against the military, wants to negotiate with Iran [mortal enemy] but run black ops in Pakistan [tenuous friend] without consulting them, makes a point of not wearing flag lapels, can't remember to hold his hand over his heart for the National Anthem - and yet will take credit for HR 4986, regarding expanded health care spending for veterans (which he neither sponsored, co-sponsored, or even VOTED for).

On the other hand is the fighter pilot, squadron leader, POW for 5 years who refused to be sent home early due to being the son of an admiral, who has been stalwart on taking the war to global terrorists.

More like the cow pie calling the stargazer lily 'stinky' or 'ugly'.

*****************
OK Bambi, I guess I should point this out. NOBODY questions whether McCain is a patriot. Your peeps search in vain to find extant evidence that you yourself actually love your country. That's just REAL big of you to say you are not going to question McCain's patriotism.

If you think MY peeps are not going to make an issue of it, then you are that proverbial deer in the headlights. And we don't plan on hitting the brakes.

[for those who need help with the insider NFL reference - Aikman led the Cowboys. Jeremiah Trotter, the Eagles. The two teams were then and now the most bitter and hated of rivals]

Methinks by dglenn

me thinks the man doth protest a little too much when it comes to others questioning his patriotism.
-----------------------------------
4.62, 0.51

Good point. In fact, just who has questioned his patriotism? We've questioned his credibility, yes; his judgment, yes; his associates, yes; his experience, yes; his ability, yes; his maturity, yes; his record, yes; his policy positions, yes; his judgment, still yes (worth two entries); his dedication to actually winning the war in Iraq, yes; his consistency, oh my yes; but his patriotism has never come up in civilized discourse.

It's a straw man they throw out to waste the time of media analysts and McCain's staff.

Pluto, the Ninth Planet - Forever!

It seems to me by Joe Schmo

It's a lame attempt to just remove the "patriotism" discussion from the campaign. We will hear his backers immediately howl about any attacks on his patriotism. I say it's lame because, I just don't see anyone who isn't already joined up to Obamanation looking at each candidate's patriotism and seeing them any where close to being equal.

In other words, it's an attempt to pull the other guy down since he can't achieve the same level. Happens a lot in our society these days. Striving to better yourself to the equal of others is a apparently too difficult. Pulling the better person down is a lot less effort.

Another football example would be Troy Aikman and Drew Brees with Brees saying, "I don't think anyone should question either of our abilities to win the Super Bowl".

Troy had an o-line bought & paid for by Hershel Walker. He also had Emmitt Smith.

Joe did it with mirrors, no running back (name the starting running back on the 1982 Super Bowl team...I bet you can't without looking it up), and a not-so-great o-line. You probably couldn't even name the #1 receiver on that 1981 team.

BTW, would you like some cheese with that whine?

I am trolling of course. I do think Montana was the best quarterback of all time. But I am halfway serious about the cheating. Especially in the later part of that era.

If you look at some of those playoff games on ECL again you will see a superabundance of questionable calls, and the ALL seem to go the Sixtyniners way.

Absolutely nothing is more subjective than trying to pick who are the best quarterbacks and to rank them. It is EPIC thread material.

ok, so here are mine.

1. Joe Montana
2. Tom Brady (could move up since he is still active)
3. John Elway
4. Johnny Unitas
5. Dan Marino Or 6. Peyton Manning (about equal but like Brady, Manning is still playing)
6. Roger Staubach
7. Terry Bradshaw
8. Otto Graham
9. Jim Kelly
10. Sonny Jurgenson
10.b Brett Farve (I can't put him higher because he has the all time record in interceptions and cost his team almost as many games as he won for them.
11. Dan Fouts.

Steve Young is not even in the consideration

I put Archie Manning in as honorable mention. No one knows just how good he might have been because he was with such a rotten team.

"Nothing works like freedom, Nothing succeeds like liberty"

To continue the threadjack...

Marino is the only quarterback to take a team to the superbowl without an Offensive line, any quality receivers or a defense worth speaking of. He was just THAT good and it is a terrible thing, what the Dolphins ownership did to him. Much the same as what the Rangers did to Ryan. Same quality, different game.

Then Fluty, Montana, both Bradys and what's his name who's the QB for the Pats right now.

Team vs QB by Darin H

Marino is the only quarterback to take a team to the superbowl without an Offensive line, any quality receivers or a defense worth speaking of.

The 1989 Broncos qualify under that as well (that's Elway for those of you in Rio Linda).

Not to take away from what Marino did that year (84?), he was amazing.

Makes you wonder how the "system" QBs like Montana & Brady would have done on those teams. Easy to be a star QB when you have a top defense and the best offensive line. Elway was lucky enough to finally have a team built and won back to back (and I'd take that 1998 Broncos team over any other in the history of the NFL), Marino never got that chance.

You know it's true.

We were asked earlier to name the running back from an 81 San Fransisco team. I'll do you one better... name the running back from ANY Denver Broncos Superbowl team pre-1997 / 98.

Name one receiver. Name one defender. Name one O-Lineman. Name one special teams player. Those of you in Denver need not apply.

Elway's record sets him apart. Wins, touchdowns, most come from behind victories ever, most Superbowl appearances ever. The man did it all and usually with no one around him.

Ricky Nattiel? C'mon! RICKY NATTIEL!

Further case in point, until Zimmerman joined the Hall this year (he played a few years in Denver and a lot of years elsewhere) Elway was the ONLY Bronco in the Hall of Fame. He was a one-man team.

If you've got a big, tight game and it's late there's only one guy you want under center. Number 7.

1) Elway
2) Montana
3) Brady (could wind up 1 or 2)
4) Marino
5) Manning
6) That Cowboy

The question isn't "who is the best", a better question to ask is, if you were drafting any of those guys in their prime, who do you take? I doubt anyone except 9er fans have Montana at the top of that list. It's Elway and maybe Manning (Peyton). Elway willed his teams to victory (amazing how Dan Reeves "run run run punt" gameplan was the key to getting behind and finally allowing Elway to improvise and comeback in the 4th Q).

I love threadjacks, beerjacks, and football-jacks as much as anybody. I knew when I posed this diary in the context of football (and did a little Cow-bragging to get it started), that the RedState bunch was going to go off on some tangent of this sort.

But when you guy shave had your fun here, feel free to comment on the meat of the diary. Fresh meat. You know, Bambi.

And just for the record, to all you who name your top ten without including Aikman --

DELUSIONAL

His stats are rather ordinary ONLY IN SCALE: he had obscene completion percentage, uber-obscene PLAYOFF percentage, and you know, all those rings, which only stopped coming when we started hiring dog catchers for coaches, and Jerry Jones started making the draft picks.

Because Troy had Emmitt, he didn't HAVE to carry the team, but he OBVIOUSLY COULD HAVE. His stats are ordinary ONLY for that reason. He's top 6 or 7.

This is my word. And as such is beyond contestation.

... because he started every game for over 15 seasons and played in Green Bay. He was almost always pretty close to the league average in any given season.

Admittedly, I'm an unabashed Pack fan, but if you value performance over time, then Favre, Elway, and Marino end up towering over everyone else. They're by far the best of the 'very good for a long time' set (if Peyton Manning plays like Peyton Manning for another 5-7 years, he'll join this group, and likely top it).

And I just don't get the insane notion that Tom Brady is anywhere close to as good as Peyton Manning. There's just no statistical evidence to support this, unless you think Brady won those Super Bowls by himself. He's had all of one season where he put up better numbers than Peyton -- and did it while Manning's recieving core was mostly injured and while Brady had perhaps the best group of wideouts ever assembled on one team.

Whichever team is up in general, the opponent tends rise to the occasion:
Just a little recap since 1989:
-- In 1989, we were 1-15. The win? 13-3 over Redskins (and deliciously costing the Skins a playoff berth).
-- In 1991, the Skins win the Super Bowl, having gone 17-2. They were 11-0 before Dallas ruined their perfect season.
-- Our Super Years 92, 93, 95, the Skins took 4 of 6.
-- from 1997 to 2004 the Cows dominated, 14 of 15 games while we were chaining together back to back to back 5-11 seasons, and the Skins
-- In 2005 the Cows induct the Hall of Fame Triplets Aikman-Emmitt-Irvin into the Ring of Honor, in a game hosting Washington. Leading 13-0 with 4 minutes left, Santanna Moss happened. Twice. 14-13.

I am afraid the only history they will have that will be untainted will be started with the 2007 season. But hey, we're moving in the right direction. First, we couldn't break 5 wins a year, then we couldn't find a QB who didn't inhale his career up his nose. Now we finally can MAKE the playoffs. Next on our Christmas list is to actually BEAT a team in the playoffs that we are favored to beat. 0-2 on that in the last 2 years.

Impeach the 5 usurpers

And you only list 1 handicap?

FWIW, I lobbied strenuously against that acquisition.

Tell me this, Raven by E Pluribus Unum

Since you've outed yourself as n Iggles fan -- did I pick the perfect Eagle for the analogy or what? AFAICT, Trotter is like the quintessential Eagle, the grittiest, toughest, most single-minded (and I think he hated the Boys pretty good too).

I thought about using McNabb (or Wilbert Montgomery or Buddy Ryan) but went with Trotter.

No Idea by Raven

To be honest, I don't really follow sports that closely (which probably a big part of why I'm not a fair-weather fan).
I really wouldn't care who they hired nor even if they do well. I like the Eagles for personal reasons and root for them when I get around to watching their games, but that's really about as far as it goes. Well, and I like to irritate at fans of other teams, especially the Steelers, since I'm in Steeler-Country right now.
Same for the Bills and the Ravens, and my favourite ne'er-do-wells, the Phillies (yes, Baseball. I have mentioned the world's greatest sport in a football thread. So THERE!)...

1996 Packers by drothgery

were the greatest NFL team of the modern era by any reasonable measure. No other team in the modern era finished with the #1 offense, #1 defense, and won the Super Bowl.

The MSM has propped Barack Obothways up on everything else.

It's supposed to be used as an all-purpose response to any national security and military related questions, not to mention unsavory associates, that may be raised against Obama.

It deserves nothing but extensive mockery. As a matter of fact, I believe the GOP should run a macro on all their documents that would replace any mention of the word "Obama" with "Obama (whose patriotism is not being questioned)" ...

So let's start winning the argument.

That BO's quote of Twain ("Support your country all the time amd your government when it's right.") got huge applause. But it also got Pastor Wright (God d*** America! "US of KKK A") right between the shoulder blades. How long before some MSM weenie asks BO about that? Shall I hold my Breath?
