MORNING UPDATE:
MICHIGAN'S UNEMPLOYMENT MAKING NEWS...Governor Granholm said "in five
years, you'll be blown away," but many Michigan families are being
blown away now as the state reported the highest monthly jobless rate
(8.5 percent) in 16 years. In addition, 23,000 more people have lost
their jobs since October when Granholm and the Democrats pushed through
the largest tax increase in state history.
Obama is promising more of the same for America.
If you like what Jennifer Granholm has done to Michigan, you'll love
what Barack Obama will do to Michigan. It didn't work here...won't
work nationally.
ELLY PETERSON...had a nice tribute and obituary written about her in the NY Times. I only met Elly a few times when I first got involved in politics.
McCAIN PROPOSES ENERGY INDEPENDENCE...NUCLEAR POWER...America wants
peace and prosperity. We need to become less dependent on foreign oil
and have more domestic sources of power. Cheap, reliable and affordable
energy will change the world. More below.
CARD CHECK...Protect workers' right to a secret ballot. The vast
majority (around 81%) of Americans believe that American workers have a
right to have a secret ballot election before they are forced to join a
union. Last year the House Democrats passed a bill that would strip
American workers of the secret ballot. A new bill should be introduced
reaffirming that right, and it should be brought up again and again
until marginal Democrats are forced to vote with the American people
against the union power structure. And this, coming from a Teamster.

THE REST OF THE STORY:
- NUCLEAR POWER...is the world's largest source of emission-free
energy. Nuclear power plants produce no controlled air pollutants, such
as sulfur and particulates, or greenhouse gases. The use of nuclear
power in place of other energy sources helps to keep the air clean,
preserve the Earth's climate, avoid ground-level ozone formation and
prevent acid rain.
Nuclear power has important implications for our national security.
Inexpensive nuclear power, in combination with fuel cell technology,
could significantly reduce our dependency on foreign oil.
Nuclear power plants have experienced an admirable safety record. About
20% of electricity generated in the U.S. comes from nuclear power, and
in the last forty years of this production, not one single fatality has
occurred as a result of the operation of a civilian nuclear power plant
in the United States. In comparison, many people die in coal mining
accidents every year and approximately ten thousand Americans die every
year from pollution related to coal burning.
For more information here and here.
Another site I would recommend is the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

TODAY'S TOP STORIES
The following stories and more are available online.
Southeast region's jobless rate climbs even higher
Unemployment figures from the state Department of Labor and Economic Growth paint a grim picture for southeast Michigan. The seasonally adjusted May unemployment rate for the six counties in the Detroit metropolitan area, which includes St. Clair County, was 9.3%, up from 7.4% in April.
For the first time in the campaign, Republican John McCain in May raised about the same amount of money, $22 million, as Democrat Barack Obama. McCain also closed the gap in the amount of cash in the bank the two parties' presumptive presidential nominees have at their respective disposals as they enter the first phase of the general election.
Union leaders join Kilpatrick recall effort
Several city employee union leaders decided Friday to support the recall campaign against Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, a dramatic development that transforms what had been a fledgling effort into one with a real shot of going before voters.
City Council balks at legal overload
It has come to this: The City of Detroit's lawyers have hired lawyers to sue the city the lawyers represent. On Friday, Councilwoman JoAnn Watson said she has had enough. With the apparent support of a council majority, Watson said she will oppose paying the legal fees of two attorneys hired by Detroit's Law Department last week as part of the pitched battle over whether Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick should be ousted from office.
Editorial: School closings must be part of Detroit cost cuts
Even faced with a $408 million deficit -- an amount equal to roughly 30 percent of its budget -- the Detroit Public Schools is still trying to avoid the tough job of closing school buildings it no longer needs.
Lawyer fined for illegal campaign funds to failed Marlinga campaign
DETROIT -- An attorney who was a central figure in the bribery case against former Macomb County Prosecutor Carl Marlinga was fined $10,000 and placed on probation Friday for violating federal campaign finance law. Dennis A. Johnston, 60, who has a St. Clair Shores practice, pleaded guilty in November to a misdemeanor charge of making a campaign donation in the name of someone else.
Clinton Campaign $22.5 Million In Debt at the End of Last Month
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton is expected to return to Senate politics next week, now that her run for the Democratic presidential nomination is over, but a campaign finance filing made plain last night that the effects of that losing effort will continue to weigh on her political future. Clinton's campaign was $22.5 million in debt at the end of May, $3 million more than a month earlier. More than half of the latest debt ($12.2 million) was owed to the candidate herself.
