I am from a small town. Small town values make up who I am… they led me to God. They carried me through college, through graduate school, throug the first seven years of my marriage, through the birth of my two sons. I don’t live in a small town anymore, but as the old saying goes, you can take the boy out of the small town…
I am America. Not the America you hear about on television, but the America that goes to work everyday, operates the crane, runs the small business, turns the wrench, goes to church, reads their kid a story every night, and wakes up every morning thanking God that she said yes. I believe the difference between right and wrong is a solid black line. I am a Christian, a conservative, a Republican. I am pro-life, pro-gun, pro-growth, and anti-taxes.
Sarah Palin means something to me. For the first time I relate to a candidate on the national ticket. A woman from a small town who embraces small town values, a reformer who believes public servants should be held accountable, a mother of five, a gun owner, a hunter, a Governor who doesn’t look like most the President’s on the dollar bill, but represents that silent majority in America that changes the game and wins presidential elections.
We put Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, and George W. Bush in the White House. That isn’t a stretch. Had it not been for small town, rural, church going, gun carrying, conservative America, we would be talking about President’s Humphrey, Mondale, and Gore. It is not wise to walk all over this voting block, it is not savy to step on one of our own because she didn’t go to the right schools, come from the right state, or isn’t famous enough.
The angry left doesn’t get it. I haven’t been very active in politics since 2000, but when John McCain nominated Sarah Palin I got interested for the first time in a long time. When the left started attacking her daughter and her values I got motivated. I bought my first bumper sticker, put up my first yard sign, and made my first donation. John McCain has given me a good excuse to care again.
Keep it up. There are thousands just like me, and we are pissed off. We are offended by your snide comments, rude remarks, and complete disregard for the Palin family. We find your arguments about her so called scandal to be baseless. We are offended by your statements regarding her small town back ground. The Palin pick has woken a sleeping giant… liberals continue to poke a stick at that giant at their own peril.
In the words of a wiser man… “Epic. Win.” It is about time we put John McCain in the White House.

I know they are where I live, which is a really small town full of hard-working people whose children are their top priority and who find what the media and Obama’s campaign are doing to Bristol Palin and her mom to be revolting beyond belief.
It’s gonna blow up all over their faces and BOY! do they deserve it. Write more, you’re good at it!

beach91 Wednesday, September 3rd at 2:44PM EDT (link)I am whole-heartedly with you Mathew. I donated for the very first time today and am considering a sign in my yard as well as a bumper sticker too. The dems are going to overplay this because the Palin pick did wake the giant up but the dems and media have now made the giant ticked off. Not a good place to be for the dems just watch.

Now I can’t wait to get out there and help get him elected. I made my first donation to his campaign the night of Palin’s speech with more to come as money allows. I now have something to vote for rather than just against.

PSDA Sunday, September 7th at 12:14AM EDT (link)I love what you’re saying–100%.
But I think that a little caution is also in order regarding the significance of Palin, and I don’t think that we conservatives should make of her yet what liberals have made of Obama–the great hope that will lead us out of the wilderness.
I can’t believe I’m using this word after it’s been so abused by Obama, but I HOPE she’s what seems to be. She still needs to prove herself in many ways–the debates, her interactions with a hostile press, and (hopefully) her translation of what she seems to represent into meaningful government action.
I’m not trying to be a downer, but it’s just not in my conservative nature to latch onto heroes before I’ve been through some battles with them!

Pomme Sunday, September 7th at 1:42AM EDT (link)I’m another person in the pissed off Small Town America category.

Pomme Sunday, September 7th at 3:29AM EDT (link)to mention, Saturday was Valparaiso, IN Popcorn Fest 2008. Liberal Democrats in the parade were booed for wearing “Hockey moms shouldn’t vote” “Obama” (etc.) T-shirts so they made fun of the people booing. They also passed out candy to all the “obviously Democrat” families and gave nothing to the families who had a dad that was white. The kicker was when a black man made his kids give all that candy back because he was outraged at their obvious pandering. On the way back from the end of the route to their HQ, roughly 4 blocks, they popped red Republican balloons (held by children), spit on a couple wearing McCain/Palin shirts, called many of the crowd-goers unrepeatable names, etc. To their dismay, when seeing their HQ and stating, “Finally! MY people!” three “soccer moms” pointed out that we’re all Americans so therefore, “their people.” I’m pretty sure if there hadn’t been a large number of soldiers standing near, snide or worse remarks would’ve been retorted. As it was, the soldiers made them leave the festival for rude and horrible behavior. Go IN National Guard/Army/ROTC in that crowd! I love you!
The most popular booth, thanks to these fellows, was the Republican booth handing out local-state-national election paraphernalia and $4 elephant ears!

pilgrim Sunday, September 7th at 7:03AM EDT (link)For those who don’t know Indiana very well, Valparaiso is in the northwest corner of the state. It is the county seat of Porter Co just east of Lake Co.
Lake Co includes cities like Gary, East Chicago, and Hammond, and it will go real strong for Obama this year. Porter Co has smaller towns and the majority will vote for McCain.

captjamestkirk Sunday, September 7th at 8:33AM EDT (link)I never contributed money a presidental campaign before until now. This is a first for me… in fact, I’ve contributed twice already. Im from a small town of about 400 people in Pennsylvania, and its people like these all across this country that will put McCain Palin in the White House.
US magazine
Scope Sunday, September 7th at 10:20AM EDT (link)Somewhere on here I read the suggestion that when you see this rag US magazine (with a cover picture of Palin and the words “Babies, Lies and Scandals)while standing in the grocery store line, pick up all of the copies and put them in the toilet paper display. I proudly did just that yesterday at the grocery store! I also loved when Meghan Kelly interviewed the author of the article and literally ripped him a new one. All he could do was pick up the Democratic ploy and lie and stutter!

cmkConserv Sunday, September 7th at 11:35AM EDT (link)Great blog! I have never contributed money to a campaign up until now either. Or letting my Conservative colors show even more than before.
Question
2006_personoftheyear Sunday, September 7th at 12:14PM EDT (link)I have a question…you say “I am America,” implying that someone like you - Christian, conservative, from a small town, etc. represents the real America. Why do you say that you represent the real America rather than, say, someone living in NYC, or Los Angeles, or on a farm, or in the suburbs (or according to the media, a 58-year old Catholic woman living in the Philly suburbs in PA who was a big Hillary fan and lifelong Dem but has questions about Obama)…you say you have small town values, and I don’t doubt that, but people from other places have values from those places as well and I don’t see why one set of values should be better in some sense than another.
Also, as a liberal I must say that I don’t care about Sarah Palin’s family, beyond wishing them well like anyone else’s family…I do have questions about her, like trying to get earmarks for her city and supporting the Bridge to Nowhere and the Jews-for-Jesus guy coming to her church. Also the firing her brother in law thing. For all that stuff I need to hear more about it, and it is possible that when I hear all the facts she’ll be exonerated from most of that stuff, but I do wish the media would spend time on that stuff and not Bristol Palin.
I am an American, too...
Fallon Sunday, September 7th at 4:37PM EDT (link)“I have a question…you say “I am America,” implying that someone like you - Christian, conservative, from a small town, etc. represents the real America. I read it as “I am America, too.” He does not state that he represents the “real” America. I went back and looked.
He is stating that there are lots of us out here that live in flyover country. We are a usually happy and content bunch because of how we live (even if we no longer live in a small town) but the press is attacking one of our own, mostly for being one of our own, and we don’t like that.
I was raised in a small town and now live in a Midwestern city. I will be putting a McCain/Palin bumper sticker on my new hybrid car and a sign in my yard at my peril. I fully expect the sign to be stolen but I don’t care.
I have also sent in a donation to the McCain/Palin website. Something I wouldn’t have done if Governor Sarah Palin hadn’t been added to the ticket.
I spent last night at a charity rock concert talking politics and sharing my views. I think I may have persuaded a few of my friends who were fence sitting. That’s what I will be doing from now until November 4th. I had been planning to sheepishly vote for Obama but now I am proudly voting for McCain/Palin.
Piss me off and I don’t get mad, I get busy.
Oh, I’m an agnostic, independent, but as I said, I grew up in a small town. The things you worry about Governor Palin pale in comparison to issues that have been raised about Obama, but as a former, though weak, supporter, I know how easy it is to push all of that out of your mind. I did it for a while but then it hit me, he’s hiding more than he’s sharing. That’s not what I want in a president.
Thank you

Pomme Sunday, September 7th at 5:35PM EDT (link)I live 10 miles south of Valpo, actually. As the liberal wave from Chicago grows, we move further and further away.
We moved out here from Illinois when Barack Obama and the governor were elected. It seems to keep seeping slowly and slowly closer though.

Humor me by explaining how Ms. Palin could "be exonerated" from "the Jews-for-Jesus guy coming to her church"
CincoSolas_del_Bronx Sunday, September 7th at 6:22PM EDT (link)Please.
I’m dying of curiosity.
(And to forestall false assumptions, I’m not exactly a small-town sort of guy; let’s just say that chief among my inner-city values, and of those closest to me, is the proclamation of a certain message of, shall we say, vital importance to both Jew and Gentile–a pretty inclusive, all-encompassing group, wouldn’t you agree?)
(And to forestall concerns that I will further discuss the content of that message on a purely political board, no fear–it’s easy enough to find; at least until the proclamation thereof is thought to require … exoneration.)

We were looking for Reagan when we should have been looking for Thatcher!
tankertodd Sunday, September 7th at 11:13PM EDT (link)I saw somewhere, quoting Palin perhaps, about the 100,000 American small towns with less than 25,000 people vs. the 100 cities with 100,000 or more people. Don’t know if I have the numbers right but the gist is that most Americans ARE in small towns.
The comparison reminds me of Bug’s Life, where the grasshoppers (played by Olbermann and the NYT staff) push around the ants (us) until the ants realize that they have the true power.
Then the story gets real good…
It’s a great time to be an ant!

ReyDLT Monday, September 8th at 5:55AM EDT (link)An excellent post identifying those values that have made America great. I would like to add that small town values are not just found in small towns. I was born and raised in Chicago, and although I no longer live there, I have family and friends who do. They also share those values and will be voting Republican (even though it won’t be enough to change Illinois from blue to red).
There are many such people in large cities. We need to find ways to increase those numbers, to show those who are not wedded to the extreme left that what has made America great will benefit them, not the patriarchical policies of the left.

This poster nailed it.
I live almost in the absolute center of the USA. My Post Office has a Zip Code dead center.
The Local Democrats here, blush when the Republicans mention Sarah. They get it.
The Far Left Coasts, both East and West will continue to wallow in their self delusionment, except for New Hampshire, they get it. Lo and behold, even Latte Liberals in Vermont are getting it.
Hillary gets it. She won’t touch Sara with a ten foot pole of rhetoric.
Every little town from Michigan to Florida, gets it. Yes, there will be diehards who get it, but still vote as thier Fathers did.
Sadly, these diehards will be the first to get it, in the neck, when the Four Freedoms are blatantly discarded by the Obama Oval Office Sofa Sitters, if he should be elected.

scottbomb Monday, September 8th at 12:26PM EDT (link)A friend who’s an Obama supporter likes to remind me that Sarah Palin was a mayor of a city of “only” 9000 and she’s the governor of a state with one of the smallest populations in America, so therefore she’s no real leader. I love reminding him of how our VP nominee is still more qualified than his presidential nominee who’s never led ANYTHING except his own campaign.

The Giant is the American Spirit...
tippycanoe Monday, September 8th at 3:00PM EDT (link)I too am thrilled with the pick and energized. Moreover, now that I understand the trials and tribulations of John McCain, I have grown to respect and admire him. The giant you talk about, however, resides all over America, in big towns and small. It’s the American spirit that pioneered a continent, gained independence from tyranny, survived a bloody civil war, spilled its blood on foreign soils, and who sent men to the moon. This is the spirit of quiet resilience, deep humility, overwhelming generosity, self-sacrifice, and an abiding unfaltering faith. Yes the giant slumbers, but it appears to have been awakened by a modern day Esther, and with her Mordecai.

Well for what its worth, just about every person I come in contact with, and breach the subject, are pro McCain/Palin. I want to know where all the Obama supporters are in CA, and then say to them, “wake up” !! I think John McCain has the best chance of helping this country become truly UNITED like we are supposed to be! I feel like its the Divided States of America! I see more democrats and independants who are starting to wake up thank I see Republicans saying, “Oh, yeah Obama” It was a trip seeing the “democrat” Lieberman speak at the RNC, thats what Im talking about, lets try and become UNITED again! like we were for a short period of time after 9/11, remember? Save Sarah Palin

Sarah has certainly fired up the base-
VanneGarden Wednesday, September 10th at 4:53PM EDT (link)The base loves Sarah, and that is certainly not going to change between now and election day. She has brought the base back home.
But this won’t win the election for McCain-Palin. They need more.
The real question is, how will independents react to Palin? Right now independents have either given Gov. Palin their tentative approval, or they are still undecided- waiting to learn more about her record. So, the jury is still out.
The base is not giant enough to win the election for McCain-Palin. Again, the real question over time will be, how will independents react to Palin?
No questions at all, and the wrong read of the land
The_Gadfly Wednesday, September 10th at 7:58PM EDT (link)McCain was solid with the swing voters and the independents. It was the base he wasn’t solid with. I know, I’m one of them. I’m still opposed to many of his policy stances. But Palin changes the equation. She has energized the base. Which means the base plus the independents gets McCain/Palin a win.
The question is no longer, Can we win the Presidency? It has instead become two other questions: By how much can we win the Presidency; and How many Congressional seats can we pick up for the coming year? Local candidates WANT to be seen with Palin. Palin can go and make the pitch for McCain while at the same time raising the profile or the Republican candidate in his local race. The same people who will now campaign for McCain because of Palin, will also campaign for their local Representative or Senator as well. More importantly, the people who will come out to vote for McCain/Palin are more likely to vote for the down ticket Republicans.
Main Street America is starting to speak. US magazine has already lost a significant percentage of their subscribers because of the smear they ran on their cover. They are trying to make it up by offering people an extra 5 issues if they don’t cancel their subscriptions (like I’d want 5 more copies of something I was about to cancel for non-monetary reasons). The polls showing Obama 5-7% ahead in the swing states are now dead even or with McCain slightly ahead. And now that the silly season is over, the adults are starting to pay attention to the election. Yesterday I heard a news report that the McCain camp thought they might be able to move California to the Republican column. At the time I thought it was a head fake. Today, I’m starting to think they might be right. Obama is off balance, off message, and showing his true nature: petty, small, and vindictive. That not only doesn’t sell with Main Street Americans, it motivates them to run the salesman trying to sell it out of town. This may well be the first time in American history that a VP pick has broadly changed the direction of an election, but I think it is happening right before our eyes.
The only thing Obama has right is that what the country needs now is the same thing it needed when Reagan ran in 1980: Hope and a bit of reassurance that we can make it. But Obama doesn’t know what real hope is, so he plays with fake Greek Columns and scripted oratory read from a teleprompter. He is what the left accused Reagan of being: a two bit actor playing a part he doesn’t understand. Palin is more like Reagan, giving speeches about the great qualities of small town America, being neighborly, respecting other people’s opinions even if you disagree with them, and more importantly, giving those speeches from the heart without the teleprompter, because it isn’t a script, it is what she believes.
