Much has been made recently by various media sources about the vetting (or lack thereof) of Republican Vice Presidential Candidate Sarah Palin. Many sources are saying that the McCain camp did not properly investigate her background, and is now being surprised by sudden revelations by the media. Elizabeth Bumiller of the NY Times, as reported by MSNBC writes,
A series of disclosures about Gov. Sarah Palin, Senator John McCain’s choice as running mate, called into question on Monday how thoroughly Mr. McCain had examined her background before putting her on the Republican presidential ticket.
Let’s take a look at the media’s attempt to vet the candidate for McCain.
- Abuse of Power related to the dismissal of the state public safety commissioner.
- Member of Alaska Independence Party
- Supporter and campaign member for Pat Buchanan
- Husband convicted of drunk driving 22 years ago.
- Daughter five months pregnant.
The problem here isn’t that McCain’s camp didn’t properly vet Sarah Palin. There’s plenty of evidence that investigations took place. From the article,
Mr. McCain’s advisers said repeatedly on Monday that Ms. Palin was “thoroughly vetted,” a process that would have included a review of all financial and legal records as well as a criminal background check. A McCain aide said that the campaign was well aware of the ethics investigation and that it had looked into it.
The issue for these people isn’t that McCain didn’t do his homework. They’re upset that they didn’t do theirs. Sarah Palin has been listed as a potential running mate in several locations, including online and MSM polls. Either they didn’t take her inclusion seriously, or they already had it in their mind who McCain would choose (my money is on both).
The MSM really preferred Joe Lieberman, someone with whom they are much more comfortable, and also because of the ramifications of that choice with the conservative Republican base. They were certain the Maverick McCain, who had shoved sharp sticks into the eyes of conservatives in recent years, would do it one more time.
What really disturbs the media is that they were caught completely off-guard. In their own bloated self-worth, they believed that nothing would slip by them of this magnitude. Even the powers that be in Alaska were licking their wounds, because apparently they thought themselves more important than they were. Lyda Green, the State Senate president, who lives in Wasilla, where Ms. Palin served as mayor said,
They didn’t speak to anyone in the Legislature, they didn’t speak to anyone in the business community.
Representative Gail Phillips, a Republican and former speaker of the State House, said the widespread surprise in Alaska when Ms. Palin was named to the ticket made her wonder how intensively the McCain campaign had vetted her.
I started calling around and asking, and I have not been able to find one person that was called. I called 30 to 40 people, political leaders, business leaders, community leaders. Not one of them had heard. Alaska is a very small community, we know people all over, but I haven’t found anybody who was asked anything.
The MSM, liberal blogosphere, and Alaska Republican leaders were caught completely off-guard by McCain’s selection. They’re scrambling like crazy right now trying to find out anything and everything that they can about Palin, and digging up whatever dirt they can find. So intent to find something, they resort to lies, half-truths and innuendo. So sure they’re as important as they think they are, they think surely McCain must really be out of his mind.
McCain knew what he was getting, because he did his homework. Maybe they should have spent more time doing their job of investigative reporting, instead of worshiping at the altar of The One.

Naw NT, the media is just pissed

Sarah Palin was vetted alright. Even better than Barry. Read this article and you’ll see just how much they knew about Sarah Palin and family.

IL_Glock21 Tuesday, September 2nd at 4:40AM EDT (link)The MSM dropped the ball. They missed their breaking news, their big story… and now they’re relying on the most vile hate mongering yahoos on the face of the planet to dig up dirt while they catch up.
They’re so ticked you can see it on their faces. When CNN’s Cooper was there with McCain he couldn’t stop talking about when they could talk to her. They want to nail her and nail her to the wall. If for no other reason than repairing their broken egos.
So far nothing that has come out even starts to compare to Obama’s issues, or Biden’s long known issues, or even McCain’s record blemishes.
They… just like their left-wing viewership are just peeved they weren’t ready… and they’re going to make sure they do the vetting that McCain didn’t do… because they know he didn’t… otherwise we’d know… just like we knew who was in the shortlist… err… something… yeah!
Just more of the same. Everybody is piling on because just like the Kos Kids… these yahoos think a conservative woman is nothing more than an “Uncle Mom.”
Disgusting the whole lot.

I'm Tired...
SimVonRechts Tuesday, September 2nd at 6:01AM EDT (link)of all this. I really am. At some point, people have to take responsibility for what they do and try to correct their mistakes, not shift the blame unto others no matter how convenient.
The onus for vetting a candidate or appointee rests with the campaign, no one else. One reason for that is that it allows you the opportunity to determine what skeletons may exist and how you can best confront them. No candidate or nominee that I have ever heard of is 100% perfect, hence the need for proper vetting.
Also, vetting also gives the campaign a chance to determine how best to bring certain flaws to light and quite often campaigns will do so by carefully leaking out some bits and pieces of the really bad stuff ahead of the pick so that it’s all out there and voters have had the chance to “know” that it’s there. Thus when something along those lines eventually do surface, it’s all quite easy to tie it to the prior information and package it as part of the same old stuff, thus minimizing the fallout.
Take any campaign(s) in recent memory:
* Bill Clinton - I smoked pot but did not inhale.
* George W. Bush - I drank/partied until I was 40 and then I found Christ and he changed my life.
* Obama - I did some cocaine in my early years.
There are many others but in each case, these revelations came quite early in or before the campaign so that voters were able to absorb and put it behind them.
The American voter, as far as I know, has a great capacity to forgive past mistakes if they believe that you have told the truth and that you have emptied the closest. That is part of what it means when people talk about feeling like they ‘know’ a candidate. They may never have met him/her and may live completely different lifestyles, but they feel like they know all his/her secrets and are now ready to listen to what he/she is selling. Those who have benefited from this will include:
* Hillary - faced multiple investigations before and during her White House days and before she ran for the Senate and is now seen as rehabilitate to many of her supporters (18 million votes is quite a lot no matter how you cut it.)
Then you have the people like Mitt Romney, who seem very great on paper, almost too perfect, just before they start running for office at which they start shifting from past positions, having to explain why they did or said something different previously. Of course, you can also go with someone who has previously run for high office, whose flaws may already have been exposed and who the public now feels like they ‘know’. Biden has many flaws but he has twice run for PotUS and, good or bad, his flaws are mostly out there.
The key here is that you have to prepare the voter beforehand. Get them to know about your flaws; they may not accept it as being okay but it makes them feel comfortable that you are human and have made some mistakes too.
The trouble we have with Sarah Palin’s nomination is that we have not adequately prepared the public to see her as being someone with flaws. She is supposed to be a supermon, with both a great family and a great career. If these turn out to be less than they seem then the public feels that they have been deceived. A good vetting process would have uncovered some of these flaws and worked to quietly put them out there before the pick is made such that voters have come to accept something less-than-perfect.
I just hope, in the short time that we have left, that the McCain campaign will get it’s act together. I don’t know what else is in Gov. Palin’s closet but the door has been opened and its not that easy to slam it back shut. What’s left is to determine how big of a closet it is and how messy.

The party base hasn’t been this excited in a really long time (and it shows with how much money is coming in since her selection). I haven’t been this excited since Fred decided to run way back when.
The only ones that are screaming are the ones that weren’t in the loop. Candidates do not need to be publically vetted. John McCain did his homework. Nothing that has come out is a surprise to him.
He was willing to make this choice with full knowledge of what’s come out, and about 90% of it is pure crap. I mean, really, her husband had a DUI conviction twenty-two years ago before they were married??? The MSM and liberal blogosphere are really desperate (and very frightened).

Expect this as the continuous drumbeat for 60 days: and do not expect any counterpoint from them about Obama’s exact same problems.
Why…she does not even know what her own daughter has been up to!!! How aware of the world can she be???
Expect that snarky snare drum to start ratta-tat-tattling too!

The McCain campaign has officially
hazard Tuesday, September 2nd at 8:04AM EDT (link)assumed the defense position from now until the fall. McCain will now be bogged down with questions about Palin instead of pounding home his message which was being done brilliantly these last few weeks. This was an unnecessary risk and I hope McCain/Palin prevail but only time will tell. This pick of Palin, although good I admit, has left me convinced that McCain just plain hates Romney; enough to pass up the opportunity to move seamlessly into the general election. I’d prefer to see McCain battle questions about Romney’s wealth then Palin’s ethical practices or judgment; but that’s just me.

hazard, Sarah Palin's choice has excited the
janis Tuesday, September 2nd at 8:20AM EDT (link)base in ways too numerous to count and in ways that Romney never would have. Romney might have been the “safe” choice for the establishment politicians in the party, but we needed someone just like Sarah to get enthusiastic about. As NightTwister said, this is the most excited many of us have been since Fred decided to get in the race.
If the other side wants to continue to beat this particular drum, then I would guess that John McCain would go on offense instead of playing defense. There’s only so much he’s been willing to take without giving it back pretty handily.
And the other thing that the media is pissed about is that McCain/Palin stepped on their precious candidate’s news cycle last Friday. They were all set for Hallelujahs and Hosannas and a big bounce and what did they get? Sarah Palin in their faces and Obama dropped off the radar. Someone must pay for that and that’s what they are doing now.
