A Belief In Small Government is "Strange and Outlandish"

In Georgia's 10th Congressional District, Paul Broun is being challenged in the Republican Primary by State Representative Barry "The Lemming" Fleming.

They had a debate last night.

As you all know, Paul Broun is a small government conservative's conservative. The man takes no prisoners in his quest for limiting government. He has voted against federal medical marijuana laws on the principle of federalism, against federal housing programs on the principle of smaller government, and against funding Planned Parenthood on the principle of life.

Paul Broun is to the House of Representatives what Tom Coburn is to the Senate: a take no prisoners, conservative bad ass.

Paul Broun is a class act. Unfortunately, because Broun believes small government is a hill to die on, his challenger, Barry Fleming, is going after him.

In what I think is a first for a Republican candidate anywhere, Barry Fleming, a Republican, has called Congressman Paul Broun's conservative political philosophy "strange and outlandish."

And this guy wants to replace Paul Broun as the Republican standard bearing in the 10th Congressional District.

We should make sure that does not happen.

Exactly! by briang

Kudos to Dr. Broun. Looking at his previous win--see Wikipedia--it would appear that this could be another tight race.

Do you have a source for the "strange and outlandish" quote?

As an aside, seeing that Bob Barr is also from Georgia, is there a serious small government sentiment in Georgia that I am unaware of?

briang, the source is... by Jeff Emanuel

...the video of the debate.

I'll be voting Monday by muxedo76

Early voting starts on Monday. I'll be there voting for Broun.

Is there any polling on this race?

Making a difference by kowalski

Making a difference in a race like this is important, and even though I don't have a lot of money to give to candidates in this cycle, this is one of the races I'm supporting -- in favor of Paul Broun.

Redstate needs to identify more candidates like Broun and help us support them: they're going to be the backbone of the Republican Party in 2009. I can't recommend this post but I wish I could.

does anyone know where Flemming is getting his funding?

I'm wondering if the Republican Main Street Partnership is funding him?

Politics is supposed to be the second oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first.--Ronald Wilson Reagan

and if Fleming has any more quotes like this one, he'll see for himself what he should have learned from Jim Whitehead, that the voters in GA-10 are smarter than he thinks and don't take kindly to stupid comments.

Painful by muxedo76

Wow, that debate was rather painful to watch. I learned almost nothing useful. Except that Flemming might just be an idiot.

for legalizing cloning.

That is quite a big tent we have when a candidate can claim that small government is strange and outlandish.
