Another Democrat gives away the game: They really don't like the military

One of the silver linings in all these attacks on John McCain's war record is that we're finally being reminded how much the left loathes the military.

I think it is worth repeating that the left does not want to surrender to the enemy so much as they do not want our soldiers emboldened by victory. Victory by American troops is anathema to the left.

Today, another Democrat gives away the game.

In a nearly-half hour speech, Democratic congressional candidate Bill Gillespie praised Obama, his party's leading White House hopeful.

But he devoted most of his remarks to criticisms of McCain, an Arizona senator who has wrapped up the GOP nomination and was in Savannah for a fundraiser. . . .

"Admirals' sons," Gillespie said, unopposed for the Democratic nomination in the 1st Congressional District held by Republican Rep. Jack Kingston, "were treated like royalty. They were privileged people. They were given a silver spoon. Their careers were prepared for them."

Gillespie, a former Army officer who served in Iraq, said McCain was the kind of admiral's son who became a "maverick."

McCain, Gillespie added, was "somebody who needed to stand out, someone that needed to draw attention to themselves and ... was usually out for themselves."

Yes, being tortured by the communists was all part of John McCain's plan to stand out.

Geez, if this is what they say about the man for sticking it out in the Hanoi Hilton, imagine what they'd say if he actually did fold and allow the commies their PR ploy of releasing the admiral's son.

No shame.

When will Barack Obama publicly say attacks on John McCain's war record are off limits?

John McCain for 2008!

(a) he really doesn't need the help.

(b) he's not in danger of losing.

(c) we only put in the Slatecard those candidates we've officially endorsed.

(d) we don't endorse every Republican because we want to target those who need our help the most.

Fight On!

Too many of Obama's core Democratic supporters think that courtesy and respect is wasted on Republicans. I don't know which would be worse: that Obama agrees, or that he doesn't, but finds it... unwise to say otherwise.

who proved beyond doubt that he was out for himself by rejecting a North Vietnamese offer of early release from the cushy resort in Hanoi.
Rather than give the enemy a propaganda opportunity he opted to remain a POW, worth a few extra beatings and torture. That doesn't count however because he's not a Democrat, the conclusions of fine, healthy, and well balanced minds.

Just wait until the Lefties start attacking McCain for reciting the Episcopalian liturgy while serving as chaplain to the POW's in the Hanoi Hilton.

When will he? by mikefisk

He'll say they're out of bounds only when they aren't advantageous to him. That is to say, probably never, short of Bill Ayers getting rather animated again.

looks like having any kind of qualification is a disqualification in this election. First in the democratic primary, having any kind of experience is ridicules as "washington experience". Now, it looks like any kind of "Military experience". Look slike any kind of qualifications that are needed are the only ones barack obama has or has not. Any thing else is a distortion or distraction

Yeah, I really bet that when John McCain was lying in that bed in the Hanoi Hilton, hovering near death as he was beaten and tortured for his country, that the first thing in his mind was, "Boy, this is going to play really well when I run for president in 40 years."

I do not see how you can make a statement that just because he is a Democrat he hates the Military. That is a silly statement considering:

The man BG served for 23 years in the Army and retired as a Lt Colonel. He even served in Iraq before retiring.

Now the attack against McCain was a slimy political attack, but your attack stating just because they (some southern democrats) attack McCain then they hate the military is just as slimy.

If memory has served me quite a few of the Blue-dog democrats have sided with the the house GOP to prevent Pelosi and the rest of the liberal left from cutting off war funds and/or demanding a immediate pull-out.

...he's pandering to his base supporters by lying about John McCain.

Fairly typical behavior, actually.

The Fuzzy Puppy of the VRWC. I've been usurped!

Find me one Republican that would slime a war hero like this. Find me one.
And don't even bring up the SBVT. Those guys were simply telling the truth.
Do you even want me to start listing the vile and absolutely nonsensical things the dems have said about our troops? And NOT ONE single memeber of their party denounces them. Do you really?
AARRGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Just a typical, small town, white girl...

I am not sure how much of a War hero he is, some say yes others say no.

But, Rep. Jean Schmidt (OH) did call Rep. Murtha a coward on the house floor and was censured and forced (by House GOP) to send an apology to Rep. Murtha.

So it does happen on our side too.

The fact that Rep. Schmidt was censured by his own party and called to apologize should be a clue. Has John Murtha apologized for saying that our Marines committed cold blooded murder. Was he censured. Did his party say...uh John that's not cool. No they didn't. This can only mean one of two things.

A. They genuinely don't appreciate our military

or

B. They are spineless politicians who have no moral compass to guide them away from the blatantly anti-military comments that they continue to make, day after day for the last 7 years.

But your right they really do love the military it's just tough love.

Now think about how hypocritical you are being. If you cannot see this than you need to wake up or go hang out at Kos.

"Land of the Free and Home of da Whopper" Peter Griffin...Family Guy

conform and celebrate diversity....or else!!!

and he is the one that should be censured.
He charged, tried, and sentenced our Marines for Haditha long before all facts were presented.
And we all know how that turned out.
Where is their apology?

And you are a fool if you think Johnny Mac is anything other than a war hero. He suffered tremendously for this country and his fellow prisoners. And he did everything he could to keep the spirits of others up during that horrible captivity. Including doctoring others.

You are a jerk to suggest otherwise.

Question his policy positions, his temperment, his sex life, his finances, whatever. Bot don't you dare question this man's dedication and service to this nation. He deserves nothing but respect for that.

young John McCain would have been jealous of how frequently little Barry got to see his dad. Children in military families didn't volunteer, but they sacrifice so much.

Glad to see you hit the point right on the head.

McCain got that silver spoon of his jammed into an open wound, I'm sure thats how his father planned it with all his pull.

All these writers will never know the courage it took to go into battle, to stare evil in the eyes.

My hope is when McCain and Obama have an open discussion on TV McCain looks at Barack and states "Mr Obama, I've done all I can to serve my country, i've given parts of my body to protect our freedom, what sir, have you done?"

Obama will stumble, try to say what he did in his city (for only those who believed in what he did) is equal to McCain, and we will all see him for the fraud he is.

typical Dem talking points by generalgrant

this type of screed is just laying the groundwork for the typical "Republicans just care about the rich" campaign demagoguery. Nothing new here. Of course, the Obama-blowing Drive-bys won't bother pointing out any discrepancies in these usual low-ball tactics, so they stand a good chance of working.

military...I could of course give a litany of links with the haters own words but I will just give an example of it in my life...I have worked with a lot of conservatives, moderates over the last 3 years...there was a Guiliani guy and a couple of Romney guys and than me a Fredhead and than a new manager started and he noted some of my Americana on my walls and we got into a discussion of candidates...he is an Obama guy from MI...now it got loud in our discussion and he threw out there "America is the terrorists"...well suffice it to say I stopped him right there and told him we could NEVER talk about politics because NO ONE will disparage my country in my office.

We get along fine now it is strictly work but I will always know he is an America hater.

Freedom of Religion NOT Freedom from Religion

See from what i've come across Republicans tend not to want to talk politics, we know people have different opinions and respect that.

On the other hand Libs want to make sure you know their point, that they are the only ones who are right and that they will do what they have to just to make sure you know your wrong.

You took the approach many of us might have taken, just with less fist throwin.

Geraghty puts it all together in a neat little package-

"Three Oddly Similar Criticisms of McCain's Military Service

One:

"McCain was a fighter pilot, who dropped laser-guided missiles from 35,000 feet. He was long gone when they hit," Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va. said.

"What happened when they [the missiles] get to the ground? He doesn't know. You have to care about the lives of people. McCain never gets into those issues."

Two:

Republican presidential candidate John McCain's family background as the son and grandson of admirals has given him a worldview shaped by the military, "and he has a hard time thinking beyond that," Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Ia., said Friday.

"I think he's trapped in that," Harkin said in a conference call with Iowa reporters. "Everything is looked at from his life experiences, from always having been in the military, and I think that can be pretty dangerous."

Harkin said that "it's one thing to have been drafted and served, but another thing when you come from generations of military people and that's just how you're steeped, how you've learned, how you've grown up."

"But now McCain is running for a higher office. He's running for commander in chief, and our Constitution says that should be a civilian," Harkin said. "And in some ways, I think it would be nice if that commander in chief had some military background, but I don't know if they need a whole lot."

Three (hat tip, RedState):

A prominent local Barack Obama backer bashed John McCain's military record Monday, calling the Republican presidential candidate a "self-promoter."

In a nearly-half hour speech, Democratic congressional candidate Bill Gillespie praised Obama, his party's leading White House hopeful...

He said his "heart grieves" for McCain's suffering as a POW.

"After that," Gillespie said, "he was somewhat of a celebrity and it went to his head. ... I think he was a self-promoter for the last four years (in the Navy.)

Asked to cite specific examples, Gillespie responded, "I don't have one right now."

To quote Auric Goldfinger, "Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. The third time it's enemy action."

Which is worse — that Democrats across the country are spontaneously choosing to cite McCain's military experience as a drawback or weakness, and a reason to not vote for him? Or that this is some sort of coordinated message effort?"

It all kind of makes you go, hmmmm.

Just a typical, small town, white girl...

The political rhetoric of one Democrat against John McCain does not reflect the entire party's view of the Military, the extrapolation is ludicrous. By that rational one could extrapolate that John McCain and all Republicans do not like the Military because he did not support the GI Bill expansion:

"Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, seemed to give a thumbs down to bipartisan legislation that would greatly expand educational benefits for members of the military returning from Iraq and Afghanistan under the GI Bill."

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/story?id=4652517&page=1

(In pin form, of course).

I'll wager that the Marne Division's soldiers---now returning from Iraq---won't be too pleased with that, once they hear what this fellow said about McCain.
